I’ve been working on this piece on and off for the past 3 years or so, still a work in progress but I hope I’m nearing the final stages. 30”x52” oil on canvas. Though the subject is based on an actual castle ruin site I visited many times in Slovakia, many of the details and compositional elements are composites from various drawings and oil sketches I made outdoors in preparation for the piece. For me a studio painting like this is quite different from a plein air painting done to capture a specific moment or mood in nature. The aim here is more to use symbolic elements to tell a story and hopefully create a contemplative experience for the viewer.

Developing a painting is often a process for me. I typically do a series of sketches in graphite and/or oil outdoors to gather all the information I’ll need for the painting I have in mind. Other times I decide to do a painting based on sketches I’ve previously made. Here is such an example, it started with a quick sketchbook drawing, with notes on conditions and lighting. I then followed it up with a an oil sketch to further work out the composition and lastly the 16”x20” painting.

Quick study of a young tree on a hillside. Planning to do as many outdoor sketches as I can while the weather is nice and the trees are still bare. A preliminary study such as this one will be used for reference material for a future painting.
